FAQ

Yes. Northfront Financial USA Inc. is a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Our Canadian
affiliate entity, Northfront Financial Inc., is a Registered Portfolio Manager with the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC), the British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC), the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), and the New Brunswick Securities Commission (NBSC). U.S. client accounts are custodied through RBC Advisor Services. Our team hold CFA, CIM, CFP designations. Full credentials are available at https://adviserinfo.sec.gov/firm/summary/301105. Professional partners requiring documentation for due diligence files are welcome to contact us directly.

We’ve designed our referral process to be straightforward and low-friction. When you refer a client to Northfront USA, we handle their investment management and financial planning — working alongside your tax or legal advice, never across it. We’ll keep you informed with regular, transparent updates on shared clients, and we’ll never compete with your core work. To get started, we’d suggest a brief introductory call — typically 30 minutes — where we walk through our credentials, regulatory status, and how we typically work with professional partners. Use the contact form to arrange an introduction, and we’ll be in touch within one business day.

Your RRSP does not disappear when you become a U.S. resident, but its treatment changes in ways that catch many people off guard. Under the U.S.–Canada Tax Treaty, your RRSP can continue to grow on a tax-deferred basis in the U.S. — but you must make an election on your first U.S. tax return to protect this status. Failing to do so can result in the full value being treated as taxable income. Additionally, the investments held inside your RRSP may need to be reviewed — many Canadian mutual funds and ETFs are classified as PFICs by U.S. regulators and are subject to a complex, high-tax treatment. Getting proper advice before and immediately after your move is essential. We help clients navigate this process as part of our cross-border transition planning.

The period before your move is the most important window for financial planning — and the one where most people leave the most money on the table. Before you leave Canada, there are several critical steps: understanding your departure tax obligations and which assets may trigger capital gains on exit; deciding what to do with your RRSP, TFSA, and LIRA accounts (their tax treatment changes significantly once you become a U.S. resident); restructuring any Canadian mutual funds or ETFs that could be classified as Passive Foreign Investment Companies (PFICs) in the U.S., which carry punitive tax treatment; and being introduced to a cross-border accountant for strategic pre-departure tax planning. We recommend starting this process at least three to six months before your planned move date. Begin with our digital financial assessment to get the process started.

We are a fee-based firm. Our fees are calculated as a percentage of the assets we manage on your behalf — which means our financial success is directly tied to yours. We do not earn commissions on financial products, and we have no incentive to recommend anything other than what genuinely serves your interests. Our fee structure covers investment management, comprehensive financial planning, regular reporting, and ongoing advisory support. There are no hidden charges and no surprises. Contact us to discuss the fee arrangement that applies to your situation.

Most U.S. wealth managers understand U.S. accounts. Most Canadian advisors understand Canadian accounts. Very few are licensed and equipped to manage both simultaneously as part of a coordinated strategy. That’s our core differentiator. Our Investment Adviser Representatives are dual-licensed in both countries, which means we can manage your Canadian RRSPs, TFSAs, and LIRAs alongside your U.S. 401(k), IRA, and taxable accounts — as one integrated plan, not two separate conversations with two separate advisors. We also take a pension-style approach to investing, giving individual clients access to alternative asset classes typically reserved for institutional investors.

We work with two main groups of clients. The first is high-net-worth individuals and families — particularly Canadians relocating to the U.S., dual citizens managing cross-border financial complexity, U.S.-based professionals seeking a more personal wealth management relationship, and business owners with interests in both countries. The second is professional partners — accountants, tax advisors, lawyers, immigration firms, and HR and recruitment firms who work with Canadian expats and want a trusted, regulated financial planning partner to refer their clients to.

Northfront Financial USA is the American operation of Northfront Financial, an independent, fee-based wealth management firm established in Calgary, Alberta. We were built specifically to serve high-net-worth individuals and Canadian professionals whose financial lives extend across the U.S.–Canada border. Our U.S. operation is fully licensed as a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) with the SEC, and our team hold CFA, CIM, CFP designations. We bring the same values, investment philosophy, and commitment to deep integrity that have defined our Canadian practice — to clients on both sides of the border.
